Completing this training qualifies the volunteer for the Splitter position on the Splitting Team.
Training Requirements
- Must be a minimum of 18 years of age to be a Splitter for WNC FireWood.
- Read and understand the Wood Splitter Safety Manual, paying attention specifically to:
- Proper clothing and protective gear
- We provide helmet (optional), eye protection, hearing protection.
- You provide proper clothing, leather shoes, gloves
- Starting, stopping, fueling, maintenance (air filter, oil level, hydraulic fluid level, etc). Some of these items may not be in the manual but will be covered in the field.
- Operation
- Only Splitter and Assistant near the splitter during operation.
- Never actuate the control valve until all people other than those specified above are clear.
- Lift with your knees not with your back.
- Know how to stop the log splitter and disengage the controls before operating it.
- Keep hands and feet clear of the splitting wedge.

- Kindling specifications,
- Splitting Team description,
- Woodlot Procedures, and
- Wood Splitter Safety Manual (mentioned above).
- Complete field training at the woodlot with Equipment Coordinator.
- Must also complete
- Receive a signed Splitter Training Completion form.
